Scherzer, 39, who was acquired from the New York Mets on May 31, made his Texas debut with a quality start, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks with nine strikeouts over six innings in a 5-3 win over the Chicago White Sox in a day game at Globe Life Field on Thursday (ET).
Perhaps the pressure was too much for him, as he got off to a shaky start, giving up a leadoff single to Tim Anderson, a passed ball, and a two-run double to Gavin Sheets in the first inning. However, he settled down and got two runs back on a Josh Smith RBI double in the second and an Adolis Garcia RBI single in the third.
In the bottom of the fourth, Texas went from 2-3 to 4-3 on a tiebreaking homer by Scherzer’s debutant Mitch Garber (7th) and a game-tying homer by top hitter Marcus Simien (17th).
After scattering four hits after the first inning, Scherzer finished the sixth with 105 pitches (70 for strikes). After Scherzer left the mound, three relievers-Josh Svoz, Aroldis Chapman, and Will Smith-threw one scoreless inning each.
With Texas clinging to a slim 4-3 lead, Garber’s game-winning RBI single in the eighth inning took the pressure off closer Will Smith. Smith pitched one inning of one-hit, two-strikeout ball to earn his 19th save of the season and preserve the win for Scherzer. Scherzer is now 10-4 with a 4.04 ERA on the season.
After spending the 2021 season on loan with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Scherzer signed a three-year, $130 million contract with the New York Mets in the offseason, making him the highest-paid MLB pitcher ($43.33 million). Despite not pitching in regulation last season, he went 11-5 with a 2.29 ERA and helped the team reach the postseason.
However, due to the Mets’ underperformance in the 2023 season, Scherzer was traded to the Texas Rangers on July 31 and Justin Verlander to the Houston Astros on August 2.
A three-time Cy Young Award winner and eight-time All-Star Game selection, Scherzer has a career record of 211 wins and 3,323 strikeouts against the White Sox.

Scherzer was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2006 before being dealt to the Detroit Tigers in a three-way trade in 2009. He formed a one-two punch with Verlander with the Tigers in 2012, leading the team to the World Series, and hopes were high for the Mets to have the same role with the two legends, but it was dashed after a season of underperformance.
Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, was traded twice at the deadline. That doesn’t happen in the KBO. The most traded pitcher of all time is Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry, who was traded five times.
