San Diego Padres fifth-year right-hander Pedro Avila is applauded by teammates after another strong outing.

메이저놀이터 San Diego fell 0-3 against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2023 Major League Baseball World Series at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, U.S., on Wednesday (13 July).

Ha-Sung Kim, who started at second base and batted first, went hitless in four at-bats. Starter Rich Hill didn’t make it past the fourth inning before being pulled. Hill gave up three runs in 3 1/3 innings to fall to 12-7 on the season.

Despite the loss, Avila, who took the mound after Hill, pitched a scoreless inning. Although the team lost, they avoided the bullpen drain that comes with a starter’s early exit.

Avila pitched 4⅔ innings, giving up three hits, striking out two and walking none. The manager was pleased with his surprise performance.

“We’ll see,” said manager Bob Melvin. “I think he gained a lot of confidence,” Melvin added.

“I’m still not convinced, but it gives me a little more confidence,” MLB.com said.

Avila, who made his big league debut in 2019, has yet to win a game. He pitched one game in 2019 and lost, and one game in 2021 and lost. He has started both games so far.

Last season, he pitched two games in the middle relief role with no wins and a 4.50 ERA. This season, he has made five appearances before today’s game against Arizona. His one start came on the 2nd against Colorado.

Hill was pulled early in the game, but Avila settled in to take over on the mound.

“Today was a really good day for me,” Avila said. I felt really good pitching today, and I’m going to try to get better,” he said.

He has a 0.98 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP. “I’m staying strong mentally,” Avila said. It’s giving me the results I want,” he reflected.

Teammate and starting infielder Manny Machado applauded him, saying, “He’s really pitching well for us, for the club.”
